Police Officer, Town of Harleyville Police Department
Responds to emergency calls to protect persons or property from crimes, fires, or other hazards by performing other duties as assigned. As certified, patrols assigned area on foot or using vehicle to regulate traffic, control crowds, respond to rescue, medical, and fire incidents, prevent crime, or arrest violators. As certified, apprehends criminals or persons menacing the public, serves warrants, subpoenas, and traffic tickets. As certified, responds to crimes in progress, initiating actions such as aid to victims and interrogating of suspects.
Conducts preliminary investigations at scene of accidents or crimes and conducts intelligence gathering operations where necessary, locates witnesses, makes arrests, appears in court to present evidence and testify against persons charged with crimes. Responds to medical, fire, and rescue incidents, provides care, and protection of life and property. As certified, operates breathalyzer and radar equipment, writes reports and keeps records. Participates in drills and emergency preparedness/recovery exercises. Attends public gatherings to maintain order.
Provides community service assistance by assisting elderly, giving service club talks, etc. and provides information on laws and ordinances to public. Other duties as assigned to accomplish the mission of the Police Department.
Must be at least 21 years of age with no criminal or misdemeanor convictions (other than minor traffic violations). A person in this position must be able to pass a physical agility test and pass a background check. High school diploma or GED. Possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License. Must successfully complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Basic Law Enforcement Training Program within 12 months of date of hire (if uncertified). Ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens and in a courtroom situation.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Language skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and procedure manuals.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
$45,000/year - uncertified officers (raise to $50,000 after completion of Academy and field training).
