Job Duties

The GIS Technician is vital for maintaining accurate and current geographic information system (GIS) data concerning sanitary sewer infrastructure. Operating with minimal supervision, this role offers technical support in drafting, mapping, editing, design, and surveying of sanitary sewer systems. The GIS Technician works closely with engineers, field technicians, and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and accessibility of our GIS database. Performs general administrative work as needed. Works and interacts with departments throughout the organization.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Researches, creates, and maintains spatial and tabular data to provide users with the most current and accurate GIS information. Performs regular quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures for MetroConnects GIS data. Develops, maintains, organizes, and shares GIS data to support project planning, design, and implementation. Performs application testing to achieve desired software implementation results. Incorporates global navigation satellite system (GNSS) field data and traditional survey data into the GIS.

Assists in creating monthly and annual reports. Provides sewer location and availability information for customers, developers, contractors, realtors, property owners, etc. as requested. Utilizes the Cityworks asset management system to create and complete work orders from other internal departments. Scans and organizes documents including as-built records, real estate documents, rehabilitation projects, service connection permits, inspections, and other existing hardcopy documents as directed. Attends training, and conferences as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Associate degree or equivalent in GIS, Geography, or closely related field. Experience in GIS utilizing ESRI ArcGIS software. Strong organizational skills (record keeping, time management, follow up, etc.). Professional demeanor with strong verbal and written communication skills. Excellent attention to detail and sense of urgency, ability to prioritize with an emphasis on quality and accuracy of work. Ability to multi-task, prioritize and deal with interruptions while meeting timely deadlines and work and interact with other departments.

Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities. Beneficial Skills and Experience: At least two years’ experience in GIS using ESRI ArcGIS software. Experience working in a sewer collection system and/or a public works setting. Strong working knowledge of Cityworks. Experience with sUAS (drone) operations.

Pay Info
Annual Salary Range: $48,000 - $60,000 - Salary is negotiable based on experience. Metro offers a competitive benefits package including SC State Retirement and comprehensive health, dental and vision insurance. No relocation assistance is provided. A background check and drug screening are a condition of employment.
