Job Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Performs journey-level inspection, diagnostics, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of applicable building structures and systems, which may include electrical, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, welding, painting, roofing, HVAC, or other applicable items.

Performs site inspections to ensure project and operational compliance with internal and external safety regulations. Applies trade skills (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, plumbing, welding, painting, roofing, HVAC) to perform a wide range of tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of public works facilities and infrastructure, including roads, bridges, buildings, parks, and stormwater systems. Performs some custodial duties as requested. Power washes facilities. Cleans and maintains drains and gutters. Assembles, repairs, or moves furniture.

Painting interior walls/exteriors. Changes filters. Escorts contractors to sites. Assists or performs carpentry, plumbing, and sheet work projects or repairs. Cleans vehicles, tools, and equipment. Repairs windows, doors, hinges, and cabinets. Assembles concrete forms. Installs and replaces signs. Hangs, bulletin boards, blinds, and TV mounts. Digs trenches. Transports supplies and equipment. Performs metal fabrication functions if applicable. Performs basic locksmith duties. Coordinates and monitors the work of assigned staff or contractors on assigned projects.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; and ten (10) years of related work experience as a Public Worker at the Town of Bluffton or equivalent position at a comparative employer; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses or Certifications: Valid South Carolina driver’s license Class B Driver’s License within 6 months of hire. OSHA 30 Certification. Special Requirements: Must pass physical and drug screen. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools related to job duties.

Knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used by the department. Knowledge of journey-level certification in a relevant trade (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, plumbing, welding) Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in trades. Knowledge of tracking software system (i.e. Cartegraph). Knowledge of construction plans and specifications. Knowledge of Town Ordinances for Special/Civic Events. Knowledge of the Town’s MS4 Ordinance. Skill in the use of assigned equipment.

Skill in applying trade skills to the maintenance, repair, and construction of public works infrastructure. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Ability to work independently. Ability to work as a member of a team.
