Job Duties

This role is responsible for the professional management and development of the Moncks Corner Police Department, ensuring effective oversight of all policing activities and strategies. Key responsibilities include planning and directing departmental operations, enforcing laws and ordinances, implementing crime prevention measures, and safeguarding the lives and property of Moncks Corner residents. The Police Chief will also advise senior Town officials on the development and coordination of police operations.

Reporting to the Town Administrator, the Police Chief oversees a team of 46 full-time employees, including 40 sworn police officers, supported by an annual operating budget of approximately $5.9 million. The department provides a variety of services designed to enhance public safety and community engagement, including patrol, dedicated traffic unit that includes motorcycles, victim assistance, school resource officers, bicycle patrol, forensic services, drug enforcement, and investigations.

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader with exceptional communication skills, capable of cultivating a positive culture within the department. They should prioritize staff development through enhanced training and responsibilities while focusing on morale, productivity, and retention. Experience working in diverse communities and building relationships with neighborhoods and local businesses is essential. The candidate must also be adept at partnering with other law enforcement agencies, leveraging technology, social media, and data-driven strategies to enhance public safety.

Qualifications

Moncks Corner seeks a Police Chief with strong diplomatic skills, unwavering integrity, and a commitment to public service with humility. The candidate should value diversity within the department and the community, fostering inclusive practices in recruitment, retention, and promotion. As an innovative thinker, they will embrace modern law enforcement trends, including community-oriented policing and public policy awareness, to ensure the department remains effective and responsive.

A bachelor’s degree in Public Administration or Criminal Justice with 10 years of experience in law enforcement, at least five of which have been at the management level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Master’s degree and graduate of the FBI National Academy preferred.

The selected candidate must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License and reside within the Town’s corporate limits within six months (exceptions to residency will be considered on a case-by-case basis). If selected, a candidate must have successfully completed the required courses through the South Carolina Department of Public Safety and hold required certifications within six months.

Pay Info
The starting salary range is $88,298.63 - $100,440 annually, depending on a candidate’s qualifications and experience. A vehicle is provided, and other benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, and enrollment in the South Carolina retirement program.
