The purpose of this position is to perform general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. The K9 Officer will be responsible for the handling and use of a police dog to assist in the execution certain duties, including drug detection, cadaver location, search for suspects, and explosive identification.

K9 Requirements Conduct daily and periodic training, recertification every 2 years and monitor performance. Responsible for handling, training, feeding, and bathing the dog. Uses the skills of a police dog to assist in the execution certain duties, including drug detection, cadaver location, search for suspects, and explosive identification. Perform duties of a Police Officer, using the canine when appropriate and necessary

Police Officer Duties: Patrols designated areas to observe and check on homes, businesses and the general welfare. Responds to specific incidents relayed by the dispatcher and conducts preliminary investigations when needed. Prevents the commission of unlawful acts; apprehends criminals or other persons menacing the general public. Enforces traffic and safety regulations for pedestrians and motor vehicles. Serves warrants, subpoenas and other writs. Ensures businesses on the island are secure at night. Testifies in court as required.

Qualifications

Class 1 LE Certified with Police K-9 experience with a minimum of three years of experience.
