Code Enforcement Officer, Town of Kiawah Island
The Code Enforcement Officer ensures compliance with local and state regulations regarding public safety, health, and welfare in the Town. This role involves extensive community interaction, including responding to citizen complaints, educating residents and businesses about code requirements, and resolving violations. The officer verifies business licenses, inspects rental properties, and monitors beach areas for ordinance adherence. The position requires strong communication skills to effectively handle potentially challenging situations with tact and professionalism.
Additional duties include assisting with beach patrol, traffic control, and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Responsibilities also encompass documenting incidents, coordinating special events, and conducting damage assessments. This multifaceted role demands adaptability and the ability to work independently. The schedule consists of four 10-hour shifts weekly, including weekends, to provide comprehensive code enforcement coverage for the Town.
A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required, with an Associate's Degree preferred. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years' work experience in a job requiring extensive public contact, including experience dealing with the public. Experience in the enforcement of municipal codes is highly desirable. This combination of education and experience ensures that the Code Enforcement Officer is well-prepared to handle the diverse challenges of the role, from public interactions to understanding and enforcing local regulations.
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is preferred. The position requires the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. These special requirements ensure that the Code Enforcement Officer can effectively communicate with a diverse community and perform duties in all necessary environments.
